What Does Ruah Mean?
Ruah is a Hebrew word. It appears nearly 400 times in the Old Testament.
It means breath. Wind. Spirit. Sometimes all three at once, depending on the context. The Hebrew language did not separate these things the way we do – the air in your lungs, the wind across the water, the Spirit of God moving through creation. One word held all of it.
The first time it appears is in Genesis 1:2. Before light, before land, before anything we would recognise – the Ruah of God was hovering over the surface of the deep. It was there at the beginning.
It was breathed into Adam in Genesis 2:7. It rested on the prophets. It is the same Spirit promised to believers in the New Testament.
Ruah is ancient and present at the same time. A word that connects what God did at creation to what He is doing now, in you.
That is worth wearing.
